The Tusk hat
The Tusk hat
The Tusk is a digital illustration of The Black Tusk, the iconic volcanic peak which can be seen all over the Sea to Sky corridor. The Black Tusk, originally known as t'ak't'ak mu'yin tl'a in7in'a'xe7en, translates to Landing Place of the Thunderbird. Zessel used reference photos from her own experiences hiking and skiing the Tusk to create the this design. Different approaches to the mountain make the Tusk take on very different shapes. The angle in the final design was chosen because Zessel grew up skiing Whistler and this is the view seen when you unload Peak Chair at the top of the mountain.

Kate Zessel
Kate Zessel is an illustrator who draws inspiration from her outdoor exploration and the surroundings that she calls home. Capturing a full mountain scene, animal or shape within a complete image is her way of recounting one of her backcountry adventures. She hopes her art will resonate with the audience's own experiences and memories within nature.
Whistler Community Services Society (WCSS) has supported Whistler’s social health and wellness since 1989. Our Re-Use-It and Re-Build-It thrift stores are powerhouses in Whistler’s circular economy, diverting over one thousand kilograms of useful items from landfill each day, and nearly 500,000 kilograms of waste PER YEAR through our stores and bottle refundables program. Funds earned from these social enterprises are reinvested back into the community, in the form of free programs, health and wellness resources, and other support.
